Ayam Serama - Baka limbat (bulu rintik)

This ayam serama is what we called baka limbat, bulu rintik. Both of its parents are limbat.

This was the 1st photo i took after i got him with me on last february.

At first, i was thought that he's just an ordinary cockerel, but after months of training he has showing his progress very well. With an intensive training, i'm sure that he will be grow becoming a competitive ayam serama.

For category, he has grown from a (babies) to b (cockerel) and now growing to c (teenager) categories.

Practically, the training has been carried out minimum 2 hrs per day,but only during night time. This is due to my fixed working time during the day.

Waw i haven't updated this blog for months. hahaha sorry for the long wait. Thanks to all visitors who dropped by and give positive compliments and support. Really appreciate it. Well after few months or so without any new updates, i'm going to post some recent photo of our first ball python, Naomi. She's a Normal Ball python and now she's 1 year old plus. Love her =)

Since the last time we post on Naomi, now she had reached the weight 471g last week which is almost 500g. We weighted her before we gave 2 more mices and i'm hoping now she would reach 500g.

I still remember the day we brought her home, she was just as big as the size of my palm ;)

After 3 months with us,they just gained few grams. We're actually controlling their feeding.

Their colors are so nice. Love the patterns.

We're impressed by an Indonesian TV show called Petualangan Panji on Global TV where this man, known as Panji, is exploring the wild life in Indonesia and meet some wild retics and crocodiles. U may watch this adventure Tv show every Saturday, 6pm on Global TV.

The last saturday show, Panji played with a wild caught Retic about 3 to 4 metres long and the retic bite his left-hand fingers agressively. The Retic didn't want to let go off his hand. The crew kept on pouring water on the Retic's head until it let go off Panji's hand. Wow, it was a very thrilling show.

I bet it's all true that our the Brazilian Salmon pink, Beast, is a fast grower. He almost defeats the size of our Chilean Rosehair, Arry, of a 10cent coin size. Make a comparison, between Beast in our last post and now..

Increase in size and the color is now much more nicer.

Our little Sam,A Mexican Redknee Tarantula, is also showing a good response on its growth. Of all, he's a good eater..

Our first pet.. and people knows us by his name. The first pet we owned and the most tame amongst all..

Orix is dead.

He was actually sick from last thursday when Mr orix found him so weak. He was then okey but since this afternoon, he was very weak and his breathing started to slowing down.

Orix, we gonna miss u so bad and he will always be the 'symbol' of us both.

Naomi had just shed last 15th Aug and on the 17th Aug we weight her,she was about 213g. And today(30th Aug), her weight increases up to 29g.

After the last shedding,we feed her 2 days after that. Naomi is now 5 months old and guess what, I think we've to buy a new terrarium for her;p

It's difficult but we've trying our best. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it. We couldn't save Oreo's hoglet. For the past few months,we've been trying so hard to breed them. But eventually, we lost the hoglet. Probably she's not ready to be a mum yet. What we could see is that,Oreo didn't eat the hoglet but she just left the hoglet cold and starve. She's to inmature and inexperiance. The hoglet could only stand for 3days. Although it was only 3days.but it's very valuable moment for us. We're so happy when its born,but what can we do. Insya Allah we'll try again soon. Just pray for our luck.

We have a very Good News!!!

Oreo has a BABY. She's become a mumy&Orix's become a daddy!!!!!

She's giving birth to a hoglet yesterday(19th July 2009).Actually her due date was on 17th July. Sorry we didn't manage to take the picture. We afraid that Oreo will feel insecure and we won't disturb her and the hoglet for 5 to 10 days. That's the critical days period which will decide whether the hoglet will survive or not.

Reptile.. yehh.. Now we've a ball python..A female ball python. Well it's a normal one but i believe it's a good start. She's now about 4 months old and her name is Naomi. Naomi has a clear belly and we heard that it probably contains a hidden gene.

We keep her in a very special terrarium specially made by our friend. We bought an Exo-Terra hide box, water dish, thermometer and hygrometer for the terrarium. But since the thermometer and the hygrometer are analog(less accurate),we gonna buy the digital soon...

A custom made terrarium.

Custom made undertank heater. We use 5W bulb and a dimmer to control the temperature.

Safety first.. A pad lock.

Overhead Lamp.Heating purposes for the basking area. we use a 75W red Emitter bulb. They can't see red colour so it won't disturb its day n night cycle.

Handling and biting.

Its sharp quills or spines that look like needle are going to raises only when they feel insecure or unfamiliar or encounter a new change to their surrounding e.g new owner and new place.

Once they know u and your smell, they will definitely lay down their quills. It's normal when they don't want to be touched at first,but try to hold them by using a towel.From our past experience, using a hand glove were not recommended or not even useful to tame them. Because the smell on the glove was totally not going to make them familiar with our smell.

The basic tips is by scooping them from underneath and make sure your fingers separate their forelegs and the back legs to prevent them from curling.Or use both of your hand and scoop them side by side.

PS: Make sure they're in a GOOD MOOD.

SO,next question..Does it bite?

ANS: Yes,of course. No doubt.haha.. Most animal will do once they're provoked. It's part of their self-defense.

Hedgehog...Well,it will bite once they smell the unfamiliar smell that would probably their predator and please make sure your hand doesn't smell like their food smell.So wash your hand first before handling them.

Another good tips, once u see it licking your hand or any parts,it shows the sign that it's going to bite. So,avoid it.hehee...

Hmm.. I guess lots of people out there are still not sure and prefer not to keep them. They afraid of the sharp spines or thought that it was difficult to keep them but at the same,they said 'WOW! It's cute' (Yehh they're small n unic)...

Alright... Let me refresh your mind. In our post last may,we ever mentioned about this. They're not porcupine.

The quills or spines of porcupine are more sharpen than hedgehog. Porcupine will shoot their quills when they're touched. Unlike hedgehog,they will only RAISES its quills(when they feel insecure) but not shoot it.

Connor's the most tame one because he already gets used to human since he was born.He's also a good eater and never have problem with that. This cinnamon hedgehog is easily to be handle. Currently, he's not with us. Mr.Orix's brother,Izzan,is looked after him.(Thanks Mat!)

After feeding him with the mealworms, he never get enough with it.They love it very much! but feed them once a week as part of their diet.

Now we're expanding our collection by collecting another type of animals which is significantly differ from the rodents family(Hedgehog is a rodent).It's well-known for its toxic venom and its aggresive nature- Tarantula.

We've collected three types of tarantula-Mexican Red knee, Brazilian Salmon Pink and Chilean Rose Hair.

Mexican Red Knee Tarantula(Brachypelma Smithi)

Sam,The Mexican Red Knee.This is the 1st tarantula that we bought.

Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula(Grammostola Rosea)

Arry, The Chilean Rose Hair is the 2nd tarantula.

Beast,The Brazilian Salmon Pink is the 3rd tarantula and it's the 3rd largest in tarantula's family.

What is self-anointing?
It's a possible response that a hedgehog will exhibit when they encounter an unfamiliar smell in the environment. It often reacts by LICKING or CHEWING or NIBBLING on the source of the smell, frothing up a lather in the mouth, then making contortions to spread the lather with their long tongues on their quills.

Why do hedgehogs anoint?
No one is completely sure why they do this. But there are some theories explain that.

They're trying to blend their scent with the environment,thus helping them to hide from predators.
The foam or lather acts as toxin to their enemies,causing irritation.

Here are some picture of Orix doing the 'self-anoiting' when we first brought him to the garden.

They'll go CRAZY when they're anoiting and will tip over every which way in order to spread the lather all over themselves. You don't have to be panicked if you see your hedgie's doing this because it's absolutely NORMAL

Wow,it's been awhile i didn't post any new updates in this blog. Nevertheless, everything seems to flow smoothly with our four hedgies. Well,I've ever mentioned in one of my posting that we're currently made some plan for Orix and Oreo.Actually, We've already started with the plan and now we're still waiting for the result. So ,if there's any good news,I'll let u guys know.

For those who're interested to keep this animal as their pet, I'll give u guys some basic tips that u need to know. This information is practically useful for the beginner out there.

They eat cat food. (We give them Friskies)
They like toys. e.g wheels.
They sleep during the day and wake up during the night.
They're sensitive with any sudden loud sound. e.g People's sneezing.
Use baby's shampoo or showel gel or u may use water only for bath. (Orix was scratching his body(allergic) when we bathe him with my shower gel. Hehe..)
They will do 'self-annointing' when they encounter an unfamiliar smell. (For further information,browse it.)
Never drop you hedgehog.It may cause severe injury to his legs.
They need a place to hide. e.g sleeping box or an Igloo.
Use a heavy,flat-bottomed bowl for their food. (They're really good in tipping the bowl)
And the last but not least, please do take care of their hygiene and make sure they're healthy;)

Well actually,u may find this type of information in the internet but to be honest those tips that i wrote are based from our very own experience that we've encountered so far.

Oreo was spooning the bowl.

Please,don't take my picture. I would be extremely stunning with that tube.

This morning,I was awakened by the noices coming from their cages. When i opened Oreo's cage, I caught her trying to tip off the bowls by spooning it and even the food bowl was filling with the bedding. Orix as usual playing with his ball and tube.

Usually Orix would hide his head inside the tube while he was sleeping. Maybe today,he forgot to wear it. HeHe..

I spent about an hour watching them playing today. They played with the tube,the ball. The funny things about them was,they would eat their food like haven't eating for years! And then sleep right away. What a nature!

Oreo was caught in action!

Oreo, a cute and small hedgehog that loves to explore new things around her. Having her with us for the first time, we experienced the same thing just like Orix. She was not feeling that well and didn't touch her food at all. She was thin and weak. Thereby, We brought her to the vet and she was given the multi-vitamin injection indeed.

We have difficulties to tame her as she is not that friendly. We try to socialize her by handling and playing with her at least one hour per day. As a result, now we can see that she starts to adapt with her new surrounding and also with us.

Orix was sick and quite thin when we first bought him. He didn't touch his food at all and then we decided to bring him to the vet. Probably they could help us with that. Orix was given a multi-vitamin injection and also a cream for mites for his ears. Few days after going to the vet, we could see that he was feeling much better and surprisingly, we could see his 'real' attitude and behaviour. It was really freaking us out. He didn't want us to touch him and he was very 'sensitive' with that. He would hiss, showing that he was trying to protect himself. After trying so hard to conquer him,we finally manage to tame him...

These two lovely and beautiful creatures is called a hedgehog. Lots of people confuse and they thought that these are porcupines.Well it is certainly not porcupine.

Long story short, we bought Orix first last march then a month later,we bought Oreo. Orix is an Albino and Oreo is a Salt&Pepper. As a beginner, there are plenty of things that we need to prepare and know about them. For instance, their food, toys and the most important thing is that to get to know their behaviour. Not to surprise,they eat cat food and also play with the wheels.

Currently we have made some plan for them and probably we are going to buy another hedgehog soon!
